On July 10, 2014, Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre staff were alerted to a young false killer whale in distress near Tofino's North Chesterman beach. As Canada's only team of professional rescue staff readily available to save stranded cetaceans, our staff were brought in from Vancouver to save the stranded whale.
The Rescue Centre's team, led by Aquarium head veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena, is working around-the-clock to provide critical care. Staff are with him 24/7, feeding him every 2 hours, keeping him afloat in the water, and monitoring respiration and heart rate. An ultrasound was conducted on July 14 which indicated some degree of pneumonia on his right side. Blood samples and blow hole swabs were taken and sent to the lab, we will know more about his condition in the next few days when these test results come back.
As of today, July 16, he is still in critical condition. He is unable to swim on his own and is extremely weak. On the slightly positive side he is vocalizing a little more, moving a little more, opening his eyes, and showing a little more energy. He has a long road ahead to recovery.
