On January 23rd, 2021, two Canadian National General Electric built Dash-8 locomotives were assigned to be the sole power on the head end of an empty northbound grain train heading for Canada. The leader, CN 2170 is an ex Santa Fe C40-8W built in 1992. It was purchased by the Canadian National Railway in 2010. Behind the 2170 was CN 2402, model number C40-8M built in 1990. The Canadian National Dash-8 locomotives almost never lead trains anymore in the United States and to see not one but two of them on the the head end of a train made this movement even more unique. Knowing how rare this was, I headed for Seattle to follow the train on its journey north. In this video, we will follow this train on its journey north, beginning in Seattle, Washington and finishing off in Bellingham. We will also see some other trains while waiting for the northbound grain train to pass by.
