He graduated from Chennai University in B.E Mechanical Engineering. Later, due to his love for police uniform and policing, Thirak also pursued a degree in Police Management from Osmania University. Subsequently, Arun, who passed the IPS exam in 1998, got his first post in a very sensitive area. Arun, who started his career as ASP in Nanguneri, also performed his duties effectively in Thoothukudi district. Due to this he got promotion as SP. Later served as SP in Karur, Kanyakumari and Tirupur districts. Arun's emphasis on law and order and the measures taken by Arun to reduce crime have earned him the admiration of many. Due to that, Arun Golochhi came as a vibrant official regardless of DMK or AIADMK regime.

Also, he has previously worked as Deputy Commissioner in Annanagar, Punita Thomaiarmalai in Chennai. Arunu also has a long experience of working in the CBCID department. He was promoted as IG in 2012 and served as IG in Trichy Saragam and later as SP of Trichy.

Arun previously held the post of Additional Commissioner of Metropolitan Transport in Chennai. In 2022, he was promoted as ADGP and appointed as Police Commissioner of Avadi.

Arun, who was looking after law and order in Tamil Nadu, has now been appointed as the Chennai Police Commissioner in place of Sandeep Roy Rathore.
