Ball and Socket joints:
Ball and socket joints is the one where rounded end of one bone fits into the cavity, hollow space of another bone, making the bones freely movable. Joints of this type allows the free movement in all direction. For example When you bowl or when you are hanging in air you use ball and socket joints of shoulder. Just imagine if there was no ball and socket joints, all this multiple functions we perform with shoulders won’t be possible.
To better understand ball and socket joints, let’s roll a strip of paper in to a cylinder and push it or attache it to the plastic ball and put the ball in to a small bowl. If we move the ball it does rotate freely in the bowl in any direction and attached cylinder also rotate with it.
Similarly the attached paper cylinder is equivalent to your arm and the ball is it’s rounded end, and bowl is the cavity, the hollow part of the shoulder.
Pivotal Joints:
The place where our neck joins the head is a pivotal joint. Pivotal joints allow us to move our head forward and backward and also left or right. This differ from the ball and socket joints in which it moves in any direction and also does the complete circle at the joints.
