Hello and welcome to Within the frame. I'm Han Da-eun in Seoul.
South Korea marked the country’s Armed Forces Day amid heightened inter-Korean tensions.
President Yoon Suk-yeol used the occasion to warn Pyongyang that any attempt to use nuclear weapons would be met with overwhelming response from the South Korea-U.S. allied forces, resulting in an end of the Kim Jong-un regime.
In a show of force, a U.S. B-1B bomber flew overhead, while the formidable Hyunmoo-5 missile was publicly unveiled for the first time.
North Korea was quick to react, warning of “corresponding measures”.
Meanwhile, global debate was re-ignited over North Korea’s possession of nuclear weapons spurred by controversial statements from high-profile figures.
For some expert insights into these developments and more we’re joined by our regular commentator, Dr. Go Myong-hyun.
Also with us here in the studio tonight is NK News Correspondent, Shreyas Reddy.
(GO) Q1. North Korea slammed the deployment of a U.S. B-1B bomber marking South Korea’s Armed Forces Day, saying it will take “corresponding measures”. How big of a threat is this to Pyongyang, and also Korea’s Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile that was also unveiled to the public for the first time marking the day?
(REDDY) Q2. Coinciding with the Armed Forces Day, South Korea launched a new strategic military command aimed at deterring North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction. Give us details about the new command, and what it means for North Korea.
(GO) Q3. North Korea is expected to hold the Supreme People’s Assembly next Monday. Would it revise its constitution to abandon unification goals and officially adopt a two-state approach as widely anticipated?
(REDDY) Q4. Another focal point of the Supreme People’s Assembly is how North Korea will redraw the Northern Limit Line(NLL), the de facto inter-Korean maritime border. What changes are expected on this front?
(GO) Q5. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the notion of "denuclearizing" North Korea is a "closed issue" drawing South Korea’s criticism. What’s your take on his remarks?
(REDDY) Q6. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, meanwhile, has said the international community must recognize that North Korea has nuclear weapons and pursue dialogue accordingly. What is your perspective on this, and how do you assess the impact of his remarks?
(GO) Q7. It’s no secret that North Korea has the capability to deliver nuclear weapons. Why is an official recognition of the North as a nuclear state such a crucial issue to the international community? What does it imply?
(GO) Q8. North Korea has strongly denounced Israel for its recent attack on Hezbollah militants, accusing it of committing a "large-scale massacre" of civilians. What is Pyongyang’s underlying intent?
(REDDY) Q9. North Korea seems to be re-engaging diplomatically with Cuba. In a written message to Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, Kim Jong-un emphasized the need to further develop relations between Pyongyang and Havana. Why is Cuba significant to North Korea, and how would Pyongyang navigate the complexities that could arise from Seoul-Havana relations?
And that brings us to the end of this show.
Thank you for watching, Good bye for now.
