Ralph Rice shows us how he built custom sized stalls for his new Suffolk draft horses. He used to have Brabants, which were 18H or bigger, so their stalls did not work well. This construction method can be followed for any size horse.
According to Ralph, the stalls should be 5 feet wide because 6 foot stalls will allow the horses to get cast in their stalls and not be able to get up. He shortened his stalls to 6 feet from 7 feet in length for the Suffolks. This allows the manure and urine to land outside of the stall making for easier maintenance and keeping it out from under the horse. He also raised the height of his draft horse stallion's stall to prevent any problems.
Ralph shows us his unique method of tethering the horses to the stall with a chain running through a hole in the front wall which has a weight that keeps it from hanging. He found that a rope could get tangled.
Ralph also made the mangers bigger and deeper.
Lastly, he shows us how he anchors the posts to keep them from rotting and making them stronger to withstand the draft horse's bumping and kicking.
