He would never see England again but he went on to have an incredible life in Japan, rising to power at the Shogun's court and influencing one of the country's most interesting rulers, Tokugawa Ieyasu.
William left his mark on the history of Japan's relationship with the west, and he is the inspiration behind James Clavell's novel Shogun.
