Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt: I do not confront knowing with believing.
noiembrie 5, 2018 Judy Florescu
What do I got in this world apart from my true passion for culture and its creators? It is my continuous struggle with turning feelings and facts into words and videos, to catch the moment for a lifetime or maybe others. Nothing it feels more right to me than being a part of cultural event and after that having the chance to relive it while working at the written and video piece.
This summer I got the chance to interview a part of the cast from the show Noe’s Child (Copilul lui Noe) and I asked the question to the leading actor: What if the author, Mr. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, was in the theater hall to see the show? The following show, in autumn, the author was there, standing on stage with them, at Metropolis Theater in Bucharest. After the event, I was one of the two journalists that night, that got the chance to shoot a short video interview.
Marina Constantinescu, director of the National Theater Festival : We are now spending quality time beyond fiction and reality reflecting upon such a powerful text dramatized by stage director Chris Simion. For Noe’s Child she has found a code to approach love, sufference, betrayal, death, dedication, life. We are living in a world of many harsh experiences that are essential for the ones that can carry on with the story. I believe that Noe’s Child is an open lesson for us all living in a complicate world with tense societies. The thrill of being together here at Metropolis Theater with Mr. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt I feel it is a moment of grace. Together we are witnesses of this pending time. I thank Mr. Schmitt for his generosity of taking part of this event in Bucharest.
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt: In the past months I have worked a lot, I wrote, I directed, I performed and when I told my friends that in my first spare week I am going to Romania, they asked me: Why? Now, at the end of this performance I understood why. This theater show really touched me, although I do not understand your language, but when I am in front of great actors, I can understand everything. I am really touched to see in the flesh the characters that I wrote. So, tonight, my spirit was Romanian. The purpose of the book Noe’s Child is to highlight the bad and the ugly within the humankind. The story is inspired by our history. One day, I met an old man, who was a hidden child during the Second World War, and he was my inspiration for the character Joseph. I searched for more hidden children that meanwhile had become old gentlemen and ladies, and they all had the same brightness on their faces. This is one thing I did not include in the book, because I understood it at the end of writing it – why all these people had this child-like brightness on their faces. I think even today I am able to recognize a hidden child according to his face glow. They kept this expression, because even in their old age, they are still waiting for their parents to return for them.
