A U.S. federal judge in Boston has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to end Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for South Sudanese nationals living in the United States.
Judge Angel Kelley granted an emergency injunction following a lawsuit filed by South Sudanese immigrants and the advocacy group African Communities Together. The ruling prevents TPS protections from expiring while the courts review whether the administration’s decision to terminate the program was lawful.
The Trump administration had argued that conditions in South Sudan had improved and no longer justified TPS, despite ongoing violence, displacement, and humanitarian challenges in the country. TPS was first granted to South Sudanese nationals in 2011, following the country’s independence and outbreak of political conflict, allowing eligible individuals to live and work legally in the United States while remaining protected from deportation.
Plaintiffs warned that ending TPS would expose thousands of South Sudanese immigrants to serious danger if forced to return to a nation still facing instability. The ruling represents another legal setback for the Trump administration’s broader efforts to roll back immigration protections, including similar cases involving migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, and other countries.
