The trial of Kouri Richins centers on the March 4, 2022 death of her husband, Eric Richins, who prosecutors allege was poisoned with fentanyl. Investigators point to a timeline that includes a significant life insurance policy reportedly going into effect in February 2022, and an alleged prior attempted poisoning on Valentine’s Day 2022, followed by Eric’s death weeks later.
After Eric’s death, Richins publicly presented herself as a grieving widow and authored a children’s book titled Are You With Me?, which she said was written to help her three sons cope with their father’s passing. Prosecutors contend those media appearances and the book promotion were part of an effort to shape public perception before her arrest.
The state’s case includes allegations of severe financial distress, including heavy debt tied to her real estate business and the existence of life insurance policies totaling more than $2 million. A forensic accounting review described escalating instability and “loss of control” in the months leading up to Eric’s death, which prosecutors argue supports a motive.
Investigators also point to text messages between Richins and an alleged romantic partner, which they argue reflect motive and intent. In addition, prosecutors have referenced searches recovered from Richins’ devices that they claim show focused interest in issues central to the case — including questions about deleted messages, life insurance payouts, changing a cause of death, signs of being under investigation, and fentanyl-related topics.
Another key piece of evidence is a handwritten jail letter — commonly referred to as the “walk the dog” letter — that prosecutors describe as an attempt to influence testimony by promoting an alternative explanation for Eric’s death involving drug use and overseas sources. The defense has argued the letter was part of fictional writing, not instructions.
Richins has pleaded not guilty. She is charged with aggravated murder and multiple related counts, including attempted murder and insurance fraud. If convicted of aggravated murder in Utah, she faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Since her arrest, she has sought release on bond twice, and both requests were denied.
