The present administration appears to be steadfast in implementing that long-standing plan to phase-out old jeepneys. Jeepney operators have been also steadfast in opposing the phase-out but lately the mood has changed from opposition to support.
Past administrations have moved to phaseout the use of jeepneys for mass transport . . . However when confronted by mass protests and actions from transport groups, the government usually blinked and the phase out plans are postponed and placed in backburners . . . Now the new transport officials of the administration of President Duterte have aired plans to phase out public utility vehicles that are more than 15 years old . . . and have indicated that these plans include old jeepneys . . . Some jeepney operators are saying that they are supporting the phase out of old PUVs but see this as a move to modernize their ranks, rather than the start of their removal as a major part of the mass transport system . . . And they are appealing to government for incentives and help for members to be able to afford new units, or to replace aging bodies and engines that are both safe and efficient . . . This include the Federation of Jeepney Drivers and Operators Associations of the Philippines . . .
