A Day in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba - April 7th, 2023

Описание: On April 7th, the local foamers and I packed up and headed out to the city of Portage, MB and that general area to shoot trains! The whole day, we ended up seeing just about 20 ! Here's a majority of the stuff we saw that day in and around the small city.

Portage La Prairie is a rather small city, about an hour west of Winnipeg, MB. It's got to two VIA trains, The Canadian and the Hudson's Bay, not to mention Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways transcontinental mainlines and two branch lines that start in the west end of town. For CN you have the Rivers and Gladstone Subdivisions and for CP you have the Carberry and Minnedosa Subdivisions.

At one point it was home to 4 railways and 7 different subdivisions. following what is now the trans-canada highway, you had the Grand Trunk Railway and their Cabot/Rivers Sub (Rivers portion now used as CN mainline to Edmonton), the Canadian Northern's Gladstone Sub, which is used from WPG to PLaP as the current day CN main (Rivers Sub), the Great Northern Portage Sub running down to the US border at Gretna, MB/Neche, ND. You also had the CN Oakland/Delta Beach Sub as well as the Pleasant Point Sub. The old GTP line was abandoned in 1975, the Delta Sub to Delta Beach was abandoned in 1941, the Oakland Sub was abandoned by 1984 and the Pleasant Point was abandoned from Portage to Brandon Jct where it met the still active Carberry Sub (to Brandon along the old Pleasant Pt.) around 1978.

The area beside and in between the tracks were littered with Grain Elevators, Factories and a couple small railyards. For the most part, industries have moved to the outskirts of town or are just gone completely. Today, there's practically nothing left. Kinda sad that it doesn't look as interesting, but you can see a lot better if a train is coming from the east or west.
