Scenes from our recent hike from Fujiidera (Temple 11) to Shosanji (Temple 12) on the Shikoku 88 Temple pilgrimage. This is one of the most beautiful mountain hikes on the piligrimage route and one of the most challenging.
The trail climbs steeply from Fujiidera to the small ridge-top temple of Chōdo-an (長戸庵) and continues over undulating terrain to reach the larger mountain temple of Ryusui-an (柳水庵). A bit more climbing brings you to another small mountain temple called Jōren-an (浄蓮庵) adjacent to a very large Japanese cedar tree known as Ipponsugi (一本杉) under which is a large statue of Kobo Daishi. A thousand foot descent from Jōren-an, followed by a thousand foot ascent, delivers you finally to the precincts of Temple 12 (Shosanji).
Mountain Hiking Holidays offers two hiking trips along the Shikoku Pilgrimage route. These tours feature the best of the remaining mountain trail segments.
