Part II: • Part II: Pickup Magnet Swap = Game Changer...
Part III: • Part III: Chasing the Perfect Neck Tone – ...
In this episode I upgrade my 1997 Epiphone Les Paul (Made in Korea, Samick Factory) by swapping out the Gibson Burstbucker Pro pickups for a custom set of PAF-inspired humbuckers from Evil Sheep Guitar Pickups.
I was looking for a more vintage tone, and after testing the new pickups with AlNiCo V in the bridge and AlNiCo II in the neck, I found the bridge too bright. So, I swapped the AlNiCo V magnet for an AlNiCo II, which not only tamed the treble but also resulted in an unexpected bonus—out of phase tones in the middle position! Now, this guitar has Peter Green-style blues tones, making it a unique addition to my collection.
I also compare this upgraded Epiphone to my Greco Les Paul, which has vintage Tokai Mk2 PAF-style pickups, to hear how they stack up.
Let me know in the comments—do you prefer the Burstbucker Pros or the custom PAFs?
