Olivia Wilde decided to break out of the typical Hollywood box when directing her new dramedy, "The Invite," which premiered at Sundance Saturday.

Wilde shot the film in chronological order to see how the characters and story developed without disruption.

"I had so much fun engaging with this cast every day in such an active way. You know, they didn't just show up to work and go home. They go home, continue working, continue thinking, come back, engage in the writing process with all of us," Wilde said.

The film stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a couple whose marriage is in rough place. They invite their neighbors -- played by Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz -- over for dinner and the conversation reveals cracks in relationships.

Rogen shared his thoughts on the collaborative experience.

“I loved it," he told The Associated Press. "I thought it was really great and I was really invited into the process and kind of shaping the character and helping to shape the scenes with Olivia. "The Invite," written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, is an English-language remake of Cesc Gay’s Spanish film "The People Upstairs."
