Like how atoms make up all matter, data makes up all the information we share -- in the form of text, numbers, programs, words, commands, anything really. But data itself is made up of ones and zeros. This binary form of data is what enables it to be moved and processed in computing.

All data needs to be stored somehow, and large amounts of data need extra management. The rise of the internet of things as well as advancements in technology have resulted in huge amounts of data in the world, which then spurred more and more data management techniques, for different kinds of data, carried out by data scientists.
