“We came to this protest because we need to show our discontent against some of the measures the government wants to impose, to change and to take away some rights of workers, namely breastfeeding rights, extending the work schedule and taking away our personal life, because employers only want and demand that we work more hours with no extra pay.”

“One of the reasons we are here today, following the general strike, is precisely to give this sign to the prime minister that the Portuguese are against the labor package that he and his government are trying to enforce.”

STORYLINE:
Portugal’s main union continued to rally support from workers Tuesday against a proposed labor reform led by the Portuguese government as protesters marched through Lisbon.
On Tuesday afternoon protesters walked to the Portuguese Parliament waving flags and holding banners criticizing the government's policy.
Maria José Madeira, a protestor, told The Associated Press she came to march against the law which she said would extend workers' hours with no pay increase and limit rights in the workplace.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s government says the measures proposed aim at adding flexibility to the job market.
Among some of the most contested elements is a limit on how long women breastfeeding can claim a flexible work schedule and reduced miscarriage bereavement leave. The reforms would also make worker dismissals easier.
The protest came a day before a meeting is expected to take place between Montenegro and the leader of CGTP – the Workers Confederation Union.
The draft bill is still under discussion with social partners, but it has caused uproar among several sectors of Portuguese society and led to a general strike on 11 December.
