German military experts started on Tuesday to investigate the presence depleted uranium at a former Bosnian Serb military factory in Hadzici 10 km south of Sarajevo.
The Hadzici factory was heavily bombed by NATO during air strikes in the summer of 1995.
First indications showed a small level of radioactivity within storage facilities inside the factory, but no danger for local civilians or NATO soldiers.
Just last week, a freelance Italian journalist found three 30 mm bullets in this compound.
The bullets proved to be of depleted uranium.
SFOR immediately closed the site, conducted an investigation and stored the material in appropriate containers.
Major Bob Thompson, SFOR spokesman, confirmed that German experts found small level of radioactivity, but that this nothing out of ordinary. Thompson said that level of radioactivity found cannot be of any health hazard.
SOUNDBITE (English)
" What I can tell you is that we've seen no, all the research we've seen shows no link between depleted uranium and Leukemia or cancer and so there is a very insignificant, er I guess the health threat is not significant ah it's nothing that you wouldn't come across in your normal day to day life." The controversy surrounding the use of depleted uranium continues.
