The Toyota 4Runner received new ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It did not qualify for either the TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ award for 2025 and 2026. The 4Runner earned a marginal rating in the moderate overlap front crash test, due to the rear lap belt shifting from the dummy’s pelvis to the abdomen, which increases injury risk. The vehicle also failed to meet the headlight requirement because certain trims come equipped with poor-rated headlights.
Although the 4Runner received an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test, this was not enough to qualify for an award. Current IIHS evaluations for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0, seat belt reminders, and LATCH ease of use are available as additional information for consumers to consider when making a purchase decision.
