Physical therapist Orit Hickman demonstrates four nerve glide exercises for alleviating chronic back pain.
Chronic back pain continues for many reasons; but one of the most common reasons is sensitivity in nerves in the sciatic region, in the SI (sacroiliac) region, or in the sacrum. In these cases, gently movement can be the best treatment: to give them better blood flow, movement, and space.
It is important to move gently when trying these exercises and not to stretch yourself too much, as too much stretching can make sensitive nerves worse, cutting off blood flow and making them more irritable.
The nerve glides:
1. Lay on your back on something comfortable with your feet and knees together. Gently rock your legs side to side 5 to 10 repetitions.
2. While one leg lays straight out, hold the other behind its knee and gently rock it toward and away from your chin.
3. Bring knee slightly over body without stretching too far. Gently rock left and right in slight movements.
4. Leg strengthening exercise: hold a knee back and gently lift and drop the knee without stretching all the way.
If after trying these a few times you still feel pain, consider seeing a physical therapist. Pain Science Physical Therapy offers both in-building sessions and virtual sessions through telehealth. Learn more at https://www.painsciencept.com
