The trilogy is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth. Hobbit Frodo Baggins and his friends set out on a journey to destroy the One Ring and thereby defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. After the Fellowship breaks up, Frodo continues his journey with Sam and Gollum. Meanwhile, the wizard Gandalf and Aragorn, the heir to the throne of Gondor, attempt to unite the peoples of Middle-earth in the War of the Ring.
The trilogy received critical acclaim, with praise for the acting and innovative special effects, and won seventeen Academy Awards, ten BAFTEs, and four Golden Globes. Each film in the trilogy received a director's cut, released on DVD a year after the theatrical release.
