In the mid 1980s, work began on constructing the 6 mile Stocksbridge Bypass near Sheffield. Nearing completion in 1987, the site was constantly patrolled by security guards. On a September night, two guards were driving up the Bypass and were surprised to see a group of children playing Ring a Roses by the side of the road.
This was just the start of a night that saw the guards discovered at 4.30am in their car near Pea Royd Bridge, white with fear and shaking uncontrollably. When asked if the police were needed, they finally replied 'no...a priest'.
Another night of terror just a few days later saw two policemen refuse to ever drive on the road again.
So, what better way to begin our horror season than with a night drive on the most haunted road in Britain.
