I'll analyse ten riffs, intros and solos to illustrate why Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's tracks were not only unique and groundbreaking, but actually genre defining.
Cliche 'yacht rock' West Coast sounding bands have been and gone but Steely Dan's classic album run, from 1972's Can't Buy A Thrill up to 1980's Gaucho defined a fusion of jazz and rock that rewrote the rulebook and upped the bar harmonically, lyrically and structurally - not to mention sonically with Roger Nicholl's crystalline audio production innovations.
Becker and Fagen never compromised for their market, always maintaining artistic integrity but still managed to define a sonic 1970's LA lifestyle on a profound level - more so than their contemporaries, The Eagles.
With piano keyboard note layout, full chord score, captioned explanations and customary literary, witty and sardonic lyric excerpts, I'll break ten key examples down to illustrate their songwriting innovation - and I won't compromise on any of the detail for my audience either. Whether you're a complete beginner to musical harmony - or can play the tracks yourself on piano or guitar, you should find something valuable to try out here. If not, what better excuse than to listen again to the music?
Avoid looking at the chapter timestamps headings below to see how many of these wonderful songs you recognise!
