Описание: This is Bougainville, a collection of islands in modern day Papua New Guinea. The people of Bougainville had been wanting to declare their independence from Papua New Guinea, and after fighting a 10 year long Civil War on the islands in the 90s, Bougainville was granted an autonomous statues within Papua New Guinea, which meant it was still technically part of Papua New Guinea, but was given full governing control over their land. However, this wasn’t enough for the people living there, and they wanted complete independence.

So in 2019, the 300,000 people living there held a referendum on whether or not they wanted to break away from Papua New Guinea. An overwhelming 98% voted to leave, so the Papuan government agreed to give them complete independence in the year 2027.
