Diamond grooving of runways (and bridge decks) significantly improves traction, reduces hydroplaning risks, and increases water drainage.
This video was filmed immediately after a large rainstorm passed over Runway 16-34 at Westchester Airport. JP Hogan was on site grooving the runway and only some areas of the runway had been grooved when the storm hit.
The difference between the grooved and un-grooved portions of the runway are quite obvious!
The saw cut grooves provide thousands of mini-drainage channels that can dissipate lots of water very quickly, minimizing the potential of hydroplaning. This video clearly shows the benefits of saw cut grooving.
