Watercolor Hummingbird Painting Demonstration

The paper I used is cold press.
I switch between hot press and cold press depending on what I paint but Hot Press is by far my favorite. The smoother the better. It needs to be heavy weight so it can absorb a lot of water. I have tried different types of paper and after reading a lot of your comments I truly believe it's mostly about the paper when it comes to watercolor and my style of painting.

I've tried some paper where the paint/water would sit on top of the paper for a while. The paper would become uneven and the paint/water would even slide down to the side, without being properly absorbed.

The paper I just used was very bumpy. It's great, but I prefer to use it when I paint marine scenes, or when I work with lighter watercolor layers, like painting animals or my "Watercolor Locomotive Painting Video"    • Watercolor Locomotive Painting Demonstration   then I don't mind the little bumps since they actually work in a favor of the painting.

In general when you see my videos, wherever you see rich vibrant skies the best paper to use is Hot Press, Heavy weight, 140lb, 100% cotton.

One more note, wherever you see me use white color, it's designers gouache, perm white. I don't like to use chinese white so instead I use white gouache which is just like watercolor but instead of being transparent its opaque. It helps a lot actually to add light or simply highlight the areas.
