Dr David Farrell-Banks is a research associate at Ulster University. In 2021 he gained his doctorate from Newcastle University. His work is concerned with how the past is given relevance in the present.
This lecture considers how certain aspects of history are mobilised in political discourse. Drawing on some key themes from heritage and memory studies he shows how Magna Carta became used in English political discourse at the time of the 2016 EU referendum. This example is used to encourage reflection on the role of heritage in the politics of the present, not only in Europe but also in Nagaland and India more widely.
