Karia is a mountain village in the prefecture of Argolis and is located at an altitude of 700 meters. It is built on the eastern slopes of Mount Artemision and belongs to the municipality of Argos-Mycene.
The village is surrounded by greenery with vineyards and olive groves. Of course, wild pomegranates, walnut trees, and a forest of plane trees dominate in the upper part of the village, around Lamia.
The metropolis of Karia village is Saint John the Forerunner and celebrates on August 29 in the forecourt there are events on the feast of the Saint and on other holidays as well.
The population of the village together with some settlements in the surrounding area reaches 491 inhabitants, according to the 2021 census and at its peak it reached 1500 inhabitants in 1940. In modern times, many residents have migrated to urban centers in Greece and abroad.
In Artemisio mountain every year the ‘’Artemision mountain running is organized and it is a mountain running race. The starting point, of course, is the heart. This takes place on the first Sunday of December and has various routes. It is organized by the Cultural association of Apantachou nut lovers and friends of the heart. The artemisium if you want to be informed about it there is a website on the Internet, which is shown in the description.
The village school was auctioned off in 1900, designed by Dimitris Kallias, and completed a few years later. In 1928 an addition was made to the building to accommodate more students. In January 1944 the school closes due to the German occupation and always operates in October of the same year. The school operated until 2003. Therefore, Karya was permanently closed and is now served by the primary school of Agrilitsa.
In the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Forerunner you will see the bust of the Oplarhigos of 1821 Giannakos Dagre, who was from Karia, born in 1780 and died in 1854. He was one of the first young men of Kolokotronis and took part in the siege of Nafplion, but and in the battles against Dramalis.
Due to the natural springs of artemisio mountain there are many water fountains in the surrounding area. In the upper part of the village there are ruins of old water mills. There is also a complete representation of an old watermill that explains how it worked. It is worth noting that not only grains are changed, but also building materials, tobacco or even gunpowder.
If we move towards the Bratsaki spring, we will also come across an ancient friktoria. In ancient times, phryctoriums were used to transmit a message over a long distance. This was done by these buildings with horrid, i.e. flaming torches near the phryctorium. There is a spring and a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Brakatsaki spring is one of the best known heart springs. It is located 7 km from the village, going west and southwest towards Nestani via the provincial road Argos Nestanis. Most kilometers of the route are paved and the last 2-3 are dirt roads. The spring has gurgling water and close to it. There is a building, what will definitely compensate you is the incredible view.
Karya is ideal for a one-day trip to enjoy nature, its picturesque alleys, its springs and go hiking in the mountains. You can also enjoy coffee and food in the admittedly few cafes and taverns in the village.
Regarding accommodation, we must mention that there are no organized mass accommodation infrastructures, however there are mini hostels for a short stay.
Karya village it is 21 km from Argos and 139 km from Athens.
Karya village is now also known as ‘’Kolokotronitsi’’ since 2003. And since then this is due to the fact that some of the exterior filming of the successful Greek comedy series ‘’the coffee of joy’’ took place there.
