Most upper extremity injuries Ross Bodine sees in climbers come from poor scapulohumeral dissociation. That’s just a fancy way to say their humerus is stuck to their scapula, and their scapula is moves too much. Often, this comes from the advice to pull your shoulders down and back. As soon as they start lifting their scapulae up, that frees up the shoulder mobility; places elbows, wrists and shoulders in a more mechanically efficient positions; and can even allow you to engage the core and press through their feet.
But! You should also be able to move in both ways. It’s only when one movement pattern becomes dominant and continuously stresses the same structure is when you get in trouble.
The Grasshopper Board, is a great tool to work on this.
