Quinault Indian Nation on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the Olympic Rain forest has been home to the Quinault Indian Nation people for thousands of years. This rich environment has provided incredible resources, from wild game to a diverse abundance of seafood, to incredible foraging and it has shaped their culture and traditions that still exist today.
As the Quinault Indian Nation people have persevered through endless trials and tribulations, from encroachment of their native lands and resources, to the existential thread of climate change, older generations are fighting to protect their legacy and younger ones are carrying the torch for the future of their people
Titus Capoeman, a tribal member, youthful leader and friend of Chef Taus, will guide Taus and us in a unique look at a community few outsiders ever get to see.
On this incredible journey, Taus gets to participate in traditional cooking methods like sea water boiled crab on the beach, to smoked salmon over the open fire, as well as see and taste dishes like “Indian Tacos”, a flatbread meal that stems from U.S. Federal Government food stuffs that were introduced to the tribe in the 20th Century.
Taus will tour the local fisheries and processing plants owned and operated by the tribe as well as join Titus on an Elk hunt, so see what the tribe is doing to push forward and provide for their people.
He will also sit down with tribal president and master canoe and story pole maker, Guy Capoeman, to hear some ancient legends and history that he is keeping alive through verbal storytelling.
In this episode, we find that although there may not be two more different cultures than Taus’ native Denmark and Titus’ native Quinault, there are things they share through the Truth ‘N Food, which connect all of us who live and breath on this earth we call home.
