Teacher professional learning and Generative AI

Описание: Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly reshaping education and teacher training. While AI tools bring exciting opportunities for innovation, they also raise important challenges (e.g. Panday-Shukla, 2025; Zhang et al, 2025; Zou et al., 2025). To date, little research has explored how teachers themselves learn about and with AI, especially future language teachers (Li, et al., 2025; Sperling et al., 2024). In this talk, I move beyond the idea of AI as just another tool, reframing teacher learning through a socio-material and dialogic lens (Fenwick, 2015; Wegerif, 2010). Rather than focusing solely on individual knowledge or skills, I highlight how teacher professional learning emerges in interaction with GenAI, peers, and other artefacts. Key concepts include human–AI partnership, technological mediation, distributed agency, and the iterative regulation of practice. Drawing on data from pre-service teachers’ Digital Multimodal Composing projects at a Scottish university, I discuss how this perspective opens new ways of designing AI and multimodal literacy curricula for teacher education. In all, I provide a more nuanced reconceptualization of teacher professional learning as socially distributed, mediated by interaction with GenAI and other artefacts through dialogic engagement (Sørensen, 2009).
