Yes, you need a 4 x 4 vehicle, not AWD, only 4 x 4!
Ranger will check with you and see if you know how to engage to 4L also into low gear.
You will need to stay at the visitor center at least 30 mins to get used to the air.
Once you get up there it's about 64% of oxigen left only.
Make sure you bring water and talk less while up there to catch your breath.
I find going up is harder than coming back down.
Just drive slow, and while coming down, don't step on the brakes that much, use low gear with 4L.
You will have to stop at the visitor center check point after coming back down. Ranger will check your brake temperature, make sure you are safe to leave.
