The story goes that when Skip James would play and sing on the streets of town in the 1920s, he made his tips not by the passersby, but by the store owners paying him to leave because his haunting music would scare away customers. Thinking no one liked his music, he quit playing. Then in the 1960s, young British kids who became obsessed with old American blues discovered some of his early recordings and searched for him. He was discovered to still be living, but was suffering from stomach cancer and was unable to afford medical treatment. Eric Clapton/Cream covered his song ‘I’m So Glad’ and paid for James’ treatment, allowing him to live until 1969. After his rediscovery in the 1960s he toured colleges and festivals sharing his unique playing and falsetto voice with the world.
