In this episode, I travel through Guangdong, one of China’s most food-obsessed provinces, to explore a side of Cantonese food culture built around meat.
We start in Qingyuan, where Fengyang beef jerky is still roasted over firewood, giving it a deep smoky aroma and a texture unlike ordinary dried beef. Then we head into one of Guangzhou’s busiest food markets, filled with roast pork, roast goose, fresh meat stalls, shredded chicken, pork offal congee, and everyday Cantonese street food.
From an ancient mountain beef tradition to a massive modern meat market, this journey shows why Guangdong may be China’s true meat capital.
