"KKK took my baby away" (R.A.M.O.N.E.S. cover) and "Radio".
Live @ KOKO
Feb/16th/2009
London, UK
Recorded by k@ko
This was my 2nd ALK3 show.
I think on the 1st one I was too excited about what I was going to see and hear, and I know it's always a bad thing when you create/have too many expectations about something, especially a bands live performance.
I really liked the 1st one, that was also at Koko last August (2008), but theyve done one thing that I really hate when bands do this thing live: downtuning the songs from the original record version. As to whoever follows their catalogue at least decently enough to recognize straight away the songs are being played in a lower key, it gives a feeling that the songs are being executed in some sort of unmotivated way.
I dont know, maybe I was just one of the few people that noticed that, maybe because Im a musician as well and it makes it easier to notice, I dont know. But the true is I really dont like seeing bands doing this, and that was a bit of a disappointment on the 1st show.
On this 2nd show (Feb 16th) at Koko, they did the same thing (downtuned songs) but I have to agree it sounded way much better. Maybe because of the fact I was now used to or at least expecting they would do that, so that might be again related to expectations?
But also they did seem more excited on stage as well, the sound quality was somehow better (??) even though we are talking about 2 different shows on the same venue.
As for this whole downtuning songs thing, I really would like to know why theyve been doing this, not in a sarcastic or mean kind of rhetorical question. I mean, they could be doing this just to prevent the singers to force their voices too much on songs sung in high notes on the original record versions, but until I dont hear the answer from them, this would be perhaps only a stupid assumption.
As for this nights setlist, I really loved it! I also think it was another higher point compared to the previous show last year at Koko. I really know setlists are a really difficult task for bands to please all fans, and I dont really think this is actually possible to please everyone 100%. But I seriously think thats one thing I DONT create expectations about, as if they dont play my favorite tunes Im sure they will play some other I would be curious about listening live instead, so thats the great thing about seem one band at different nights.
Ps: I really hope they play my favorite tunes next time though: Standard Break From Life and Hell Yes.
Also I was really happy to see Carlos (former Lagwagon tech) working for them! I mean, I think that was him, it looked pretty much like him really.
As a final note: What the hell happened to The Auditions singer? That guy literally blow up the whole set from his band, that in my opinion was doing a decent job up to when this guy started getting things way too personal from a few people showing the middle finger. Grow up, dude. Like you even said during your set, This is a punk rock show!, what were you expecting? Flowers?
Keep on the great tunes Trio!
