In the early 20th century, a street fighter by the name of Wong Ku Fat (sometimes spelled Wong Gu Faat and/or Wong Kuk Fat) opened a martial arts club in Honolulu's Chinatown. Prior to opening his "Chinese cultural club", Wong was a "bouncer" in Hong Kong.
While working on a floating bordello, Wong Ku Fat stopped a non-paying client from leaving the boat. The patron was a "regular" and the son of a wealthy businessman. When Wong insisted on getting the fee, the wealthy patron's two bodyguards intervened. Wong Ku Fat kills the trio. The grieving parents sought revenge by sending various fighters and Wong Ku Fat dispatched the various revenge seekers. Wong Ku Fat came to this conclusion. Eventually, the rich parents would find out which restaurants he frequented. They could easily have him poisoned. Worse yet, if they found out where he lived, they would kill his entire family.
Since Wong worked also as a merchant marine, he had access to various ships that sailed the world. Without telling a soul, he slipped away one night with Honolulu's Chinatown as his destination. During that time, many Hakka Chinese worked the sugar cane fields and factories. Arriving in Hawaii and without any professional skills, Wong opened a kung fu school (called a Chinese cultural "club"). In the early 1900s, Chinese sifus only accepted "full-blooded" Chinese students. The vetting processes included the presentation of the student's "family tree".
Wong Ku Fat's back-fist was the primary weapon. The whipping action led to a penetrating blow that would floor the opponent.
Sifu Gary Gee studied Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan from his brother-in-law, Grandmaster Ralph Shun. Shun was a member of Wong Ku Fat's cultural club in the 1950s and studied directly from Wong Ku Fat.
Gary Gee teaches in Southern California.
