UPSOUND Colleen Barry, The Associated Press (English):
“This is the heart of the ceremony. But because this is the most widespread Olympics ever in history the ceremonies are also going to be spread out and there’s going to be a ceremony in Cortina which is the other host city, but another one in Predazzo, in the Val di Fiemme cluster and another one in Livigno for the mountain cluster.”

“This was a big mash-up tribute to Italy. Everything that people abroad know about Italy from its opera music to its hand gestures. So we learned a couple new hand gestures from a comedian. The parade of athletes was spread across four different sites, so there were many moments in Milan where we didn't have any athletes because their winter athletes were up in the mountains.”

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Colleen Barry, The Associated Press:
“We had Mariah Carey thrilling the crowd with ‘volare’, singing the refrain, everybody knows so well. It was a really well-received ceremony, all in all. I think people were engaged and there was a lot of cheering. So I think it was a success for the people who have come out tonight.”

STORYLINE:
Associated Press journalists joined thousands of spectators heading into Milan’s San Siro Stadium to cover the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, as Italy welcomed the Games back for the first time in 20 years.
The ceremony marked the start of the most geographically dispersed Winter Olympics ever staged, with events and athlete parades taking place across multiple locations in northern Italy.
The evening began on the move, as shuttle buses carried journalists through Milan towards San Siro Stadium, which is one of the city’s most recognisable sporting landmarks and the main hub of the opening ceremony.
