I love the Phantom of the Opera and therefore I decided to create this storyboarding sequence for “The Mirror”. Enjoy!
If you wish to see the Animatic, you may find the Frankensteined version of it on / mili.fay.art in my Highlights.
Read on only if you are not afraid to discover Spoilers.
STORY
Thought inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webbers Musical as well as the novel by Gaston Leroux, as a fan, I’ve been directing my own version of the story. In 2017 I published an artist’s sketchbooks that for the first time showed some thumbnail drawings of my ideas.
PREVIOUSLY
Before “The Mirror” Scene sequence, Raoul found Christine after searching for her for over a decade. He watched her perform as Cleopatra in “Cesar and Cleopatra” (I did away with Hannibal, because his story is not as well known around the globe). He walks into her dressing room pretending to be delivering an enormous bouquet. They are happy to have found each other. Raoul invites Christine to dinner, but she tells him that the Angel of Music does not want her going out in the evenings. Thinking she’s joking, Raoul pulls out an evening gown from the wardrobe and hangs it next to her nightgown, telling her he’ll be back for her in fifteen minutes.
Scene.
STORY NOTES
Christine truly believes that the Angel of Music was sent to her by her late father to tutor her in music. She has no idea that the Angel and the mysterious Phantom are one and the same.
Erik/Phantom is a magician and has the ability to throw his voice around the room. This is why you will see Christine looking around the room, because the Angel’s voice appears to come from different directions.
FILMMAKING NOTES
When the Angel of Music sings the camera moves, particularly if he’s trying to entice Christine. Note that when she realizes she is not speaking to an Angel that the camera stops moving.
You may also see the change of colour when Phantom appears. This is indicated by the colours moving from the warm grays to cool grays. In the actual movie the scenes with Phantom would be more vibrant/saturated and the cutting and camera angles would be more graphic. This will be apparent in “The Phantom of the Opera” storyboard to follow.
