Kenya's Parliament has summoned the Cabinet Secretaries for Petroleum and Energy over the elimination of a fuel subsidy scheme introduced in April. Petroleum Secretary, John Munyes and his Energy counterpart, Charles Keter are expected to appear before the House next Tuesday. The scrapping of the subsidies took effect on September 15. Kenya's energy regulator has since March kept diesel and kerosene prices unchanged at about $0.98 and $0.89 a litre respectively. Petrol also remained unchanged at $1.15 since June. Removal of the subsidy this week however has sent fuel prices to record levels. The price of petrol is up by about 6% to about $1.2 a litre in the capital. The cost is set to rise further with the introduction of a near 5% excise duty on fuel from October 1.
