Thelonius Sphere Monk (1917-1982), has been one of the biggest influences on my musical journey. Monk inspired me as a writer of music and as a performer. Although heavily influenced by Duke Ellington, he was one of the 'most true to himself' of the Jazz musicians of his day, which would probably still be true today.
His angular, quirky style may certainly not have been to everyone's taste-but to me, he captured the essence of a 'Punk' attitude to music, way before the poseur 'Punks' of the late seventies.
Monk epitomises the word 'artist'.
It's taken me a while to finally record some of these compositions, some of which I first learnt in the early eighties. The 'Studio' has evolved and become upwardly mobile !!
This selection of Thelonius Monk compositions, interpreted by myself on solo piano, will hopefully contribute to perpetuating the music of one of the elite of the musical world-Thelonius Sphere Monk-and propel us ever closer towards.. Planet Monk !!!!!
