In this video, I explain why I have chosen to refer to the word "that" as a "definite article." That is, I believe that the FIRST of the FIVE grammatical functions of the word "that" is that of a "definite article."
I mention, in this video, that I highly doubt that any of my viewers can go even ONE day WITHOUT using the word "that." Can you do it? Can you do . . . that?
NOTE: At 7:50, I SHOULD have said "RED book"; that is, I SHOULD have said, "There might be more than one RED book."
In this short series of videos, I examine the word "that." My dictionary (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, 1991) contains almost 160,000 entries. My premise is that the word "that" is one of the very most significant words in the English language. Though I can't prove it, I believe the word "that" to be (1) one of the oldest words in ANY language; and (2) one of the most frequently used words in the English language.
