Bass is of course a necessary part of any mix, but it should only be present on instruments that require it, namely kick drum and bass guitar, or indeed their synth equivalents.

A mic records everything regardless of the instrument, so lots of string parts that don’t have any bass still have the rumble of the mic (though many mics have a bass attenuation switch for this very purpose).
The solution here is to roll off the bass on any mic recording that isn’t kick or bass guitar. The frequency at which you do this is of course completely dependent on context, but a good rule of thumb is 100 Hz for most things.
