Here’s why you need Prebioitics in your skincare.
In this video I’m going to discuss what prebiotics are, why they should be in your skincare, and ways to tell if they are.
Many of use have heard of the term probiotics. When we think of probiotics, we think of food filled with certain strains of bacteria that inoculate our digestive system with good bacteria for the purpose of regulating our digestive system. You’ll find probiotics in certain yogurts, kimchi, keffir, Kombucha and more. Yes, that’s bacteria (and yeast and fungi) that we eat intentionally. The honest truth is that the human body contains about 100 trillion cells, but only maybe one in 10 of those cells is actually — human. All those other cells are the bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and parasites living in and on us. Our goal is to just co-exist!
Did you know that evidence since the 1930’s links gut health to skin health? While that’s not the topic of this blog, it’s still interesting to know and possibly an insight into why you might have be having skin issues.
So, what are prebiotic? Prebiotics are food to feed good bacteria ( those probiotics) in our digestive tract or on our skin. The next question is, do your skincare products have prebiotics in them? If they don’t, they should! Here’s why.
We want more good than bad bacteria on our skin. And, we want to keep this environment healthy to prevent inflammation, excessive dryness or oiliness, flair ups, and premature aging.
You might have heard me say before in my 3 Easy Steps to Great Skin ( • 3 Easy Steps ), that our skin needs to be in certain pH range to work properly. That the moisturizer helps your skin create a barrier so that your skin can do its job. Using prebiotic in your skin care helps maintaining that perfect pH range because it helps increase the population of good bacteria on your skin to PREVENT problems from occurring in the first place. In effect, instead of treating your skin for redness, rosacea, acne, and fine lines, you can possibly prevent them from occurring in at all. I said that right, having the perfect pH for your skin can prevent wrinkles. Yes, please! A more alkaline environment on your skin increases bad bacteria on your skin that leads to wrinkles!
How can you tell if the pH range on your skin is too alkaline? One of the biggest culprits is your soap. Most notably, bar soaps. If after you was your face your skin feels overly dry and sensitive - you know the squeaky clean feeling, your pH range is too alkaline. You can also go so far as to buy pH test strips for your skin too. But, you don’t have to go to that extreme. A better bet is gel soaps tend to be closer to our natural pH range. Or, buy a product with Prebiotics in them which are found primarily in gel form.
How do I tell if my skincare has Prebiotics in them? Well, it’s the shooting star of skincare right now so it probably has that advertised on the bottle. Though to be sure, If you’re a label reader, look for ingredients like chlorophyll, sea kelp or oligosaccharides.
The take away: Feed the good bacteria on your skin to create the perfect environment for your skin to act properly and slow the signs of aging. You can do that with the help of prebiotics.
