In 1994 Alice in Chains released their second EP - Jar of Flies - one of my favourite releases from the band. It featured the haunting and powerful song 'Nutshell'. Today, let’s take a deep dive into to the song, it’s meaning and it’s lasting legacy. I also want to hear from you guys your thoughts on the song and what you think it means. "Alice in Chains, was formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Layne Staley, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Starr, and drummer Sean Kinney. The band took its name from Staley's previous group, Alice N' Chains." - kind of like Guns N’ Roses.

Alice in Chains quickly became a prominent part of the so-called grunge movement, alongside other Seattle bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Their sound, however, was deeply rooted in heavy metal, and great harmonies. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell told the Age in 1994 “i’ve always been a fan of bands that had great harmonies. I love heavy music and i love heavy rock, but you want a marriage between the two. I’m not into bands that just play speed thrash stuff.”

"The band's debut album, 'Facelift,' released in 1990 featured the hit single 'Man in the Box.' The album's success helped Alice gain a dedicated following and established them as one of the leading bands of the grunge era being the first band of the big 4 of grunge to have a gold album. ." I feel like facelift is often overlooked in the band’s discography. There’s some great tracks in addition to man in the box - bleed the freak (really like the live version), we die young, sea of sorrow.and it ain’t like that.

"In early 1992, the group released their first EP SAP. It proved to be another successful release, going gold and produced a successful hit in the song Got Me Wrong - which appeared in the movie Clerks. It provided a glimpse into the softer side of the band, something they tapped into for their jar of flies release.

By the end of 92, Alice released released what is arguably their crown jewel of their career and one of the most brutally dark and honest records of the grunge era, 'Dirt,' The album included hits like 'Would?' 'Rooster,' Them Bones, Down in a Hole, Angry Chair and and it showcased the band's ability to blend heavy riffs with introspective and dark lyrics." Dig a little deeper and you’ll find some other great tracks - my personal favourite Rain When I Die Dam That River.and Junkhead.

During and after the tour of 'Dirt,' Alice faced a period of turmoil. Frontman Layne Staley's struggles with addiction were becoming more pronounced, and the group fired original bassist Mike Star was fired from the band in early 1993 due to his drug use. But at the time the band told the press, the split was having to do with priorities. Alice claimed they wanted to keep touring, while mike wanted to be home.. He was replaced with Ozzy bassist and one time tourmate Mike Inez.

By the summer of 93, hot off the heels of playing, lollapalooza the Alice wanted to hit the studio again. They told their label Columbia that they had hundreds of songs written, when in reality they hadn’t written anything. They told the same story to producer Tobi Wright who was chosen to work on the album. He had spoken to jerry prior to hitting the studio in seattle and asked that the band send him the songs they were working on to which jerry responded that by the time they sent them to the producer they’d already be done. Jerry instead, told Wright to meet the band in Seattle. When Wright showed up, Jerry told him, they had no songs. So Wright asked him, what he wanted to do, since London Bridge Studios was booked for 10 days.

Is it okay if we just jam for the next ten days?” Jerry asked.
“Yeah. Best band in the world, jamming? What bad could happen? I didn’t have anything better to do,” was Wright’s response
