Mesaba Airlines started as an independent carrier in Northeast Minnesota and became the first Northwest Airlink partner in the mid 1980s, serving first from the Minneapolis/St. Paul hub, and then expanding to the Detroit hub shortly after the merger with Republic. Mesaba used a variety of propeller-driven aircraft, eventually becoming a major operator of the Saab 340, and also introduced jet Airlink service - initially with the Avro RJ85 but later standardizing on the Canadair/Bombardier CRJ series. This video from 2007 introduces the final type Mesaba would operate for NWA, the CRJ-900.
Filled with behind-the-scenes interviews of many Mesaba staff, maintenance, ground service, and gate activities, and airport scenes we'll never get to experience in person again, this sharply-produced video is a rich time capsule from an era so close yet quickly receding in memory, and an important element of Northwest's equipment and service strategy just before its merger with Delta.
