Celia Cruz, in one of her earliest TV appearances (likely late teens or early twenties), sings "Ogguere," an Afro song composed by Gilberto Valdés. According to Rosa Marquetti Torres, author of "Celia en Cuba 1925-1962," this performance may have been with the Symphonic Orchestra of Enrique González Mántici. The recording likely took place between 1945-1949 on the program "Momento Afro Cubano" presented by La Emisora Mil Diez, a radio station owned by the Popular Socialist Party. This rare footage offers a glimpse into Celia's early career and her connection to Cuban music history.
DEEPER IN :
Following the entry of the Soviet Union in the war against Germany the Cuban communists re-emerged as a legal political party, the PSP. The party purchased Radio Lavín and converted it into Radio Mil Diez in 1943.[he first broadcast was made on April 1, 1943.The name reflected the dial sign (1010). Decades later, as the Cuban Revolution raged in 1960, Celia (touring in concert in Mexico at the time), made the decision not to return to the island. In 1961, she moved to the U.S., and married Pedro Knight, her longtime friend and trumpet player. Fidel Castro was so enraged by Cruz’s defection, he barred her from returning to Cuba. In fact, Celia never returned to her homeland.
