Case Type: Railroad: Rawls v. Union Pacific Railroad
Description: A pickup truck approached an elevated railroad crossing with a stop sign at the bottom of the incline. From the stopped location the driver was unable to see the approaching locomotive. When the driver accelerated up the hill to the crossing, the engine stalled on the tracks and the pickup was struck by an oncoming locomotive.
Visualizations Produced:
After visiting the accident site and performing a laser scan of the area, a 3D model of the crossing and surrounding are were produced and 3D models of an exemplar pickup truck and locomotive were placed at their correct speeds and locations. Using the locomotive’s onboard camera we were able to photogrammetrically determine that based on the angle of the approaching road to the crossing and the location of the stop sign, the driver would not have been able to see the approaching locomotive from the stop sign, and that by the time he could see the locomotive his engine had stalled.
