Expense ratio is the annual maintenance charge levied by mutual funds to finance its expenses. It includes annual operating costs, including management fees, allocation charges, advertising costs, etc. of the fund.
In India, the expense ratio could be anywhere between 0.05% - 2%. This depends on what type of fund it is and the size of the fund. Generally, highly managed funds and thematic funds will have higher expense ratio and index funds will have the lowest expense ratios. Also bigger the fund is, the lesser the expense ratio will be, and vice versa.
These charges and fees are adjusted in the fund's NAV itself, so you won't see a debit in your bank account as a charge, and might go unnoticed.
Why is it important to see expense ratio while investing in mutual funds?
Because expense ratio has a huge role to play in your fund's performance. A very high expense ratio can severely affect your returns as an investor. So always be aware of the charges and fees you pay to invest in a mutual fund.
