After a stroke, if you wear an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) that prevents the ankle from being behind the knee, you will have difficulty standing without rocking forward, leaning to one side or using a hand to push form the chair. The ankle joint becomes stiff whether you have the brace on or not. Ankle mobility is needed for efficient and effective standing so you can hold objects in both hands, keep your trunk in midline, and lean forward one time to unweight your buttock as you move into standing. The AFO which is supposed to pick up your foot, ends up making the lower extremity weaker. Loosen that restrictive strap at the ankle joint and especially the one at the top of the leg to allow movement. Second, use a door stopper as an exercise tool to improve your ankle range of motion and muscle strength. Watch this video to learn how to improve your sit to stand after having a stroke.
