81 years ago, on January 27th, 1944, the Siege of Leningrad ended. You see, the capture of Leningrad was one of the main goals of the Germans during Operation Barbarossa, as it was not only politically and symbolically important, but it also had military importance with over 600 factories and the location of the main Soviet Baltic Fleet. Army Group North under Field Marshal Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb advanced to Leningrad; the city's civilians frantically constructed trenches and anti-tank fortifications, which actually halted the Germans in the suburbs of Leningrad. With his army now bottled up in trench warfare, the Fuhrer ordered them to settle in for a siege. Constant artillery and Luftwaffe bombardment killed many. But the biggest cause of death was the critically low food supply, which led to an estimated starvation death toll of around 1 million. The only supply route to the outside world was Lake Ladoga, which was used to carry in food and supplies, though the city continued to stay critically undersupplied. After suffering 1.5 million casualties under an almost 900-day siege, the Red Army, with 1.25 million men, overran the German lines, causing them to retreat from the city.
